Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
