Much like the recent storm hit the northwest the prior day, City swept Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 win for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline marked back-to-back WSL losses for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes severely dented.

United’s capability to balance domestic and continental football with a small roster has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the Champions League. Looking at the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would seriously challenge this ability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they seemed weary all game, the landmark win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the exclusion of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

City, in opposition, have no similar loading worries. Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since returning from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

Second Half

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the match. Former City player Park came nearest, striking the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to produce a single shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have extended their cushion when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Having failed to beat any opponent who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after nine games.
