Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
