Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Super Cup in the Middle East.
PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.
The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the net early on.
Yet, Marseille struck two times late to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.
In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Traore.
In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout win.
Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
