Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Fans

The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

Historical Context for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Issues and Media Attention

The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its modern-era championship drought.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing effort to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their position or wealth.
