As per a new book, however, that title belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated around ten sawyers laboring for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber could be produced within seven days.”
